David Lyons is a joint PhD candidate at Utrecht University and the University of Bologna within the programme of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures: Diversity and Inclusion, specifically being part of the EDGES curriculum (women’s and gender studies). The preliminary title of his project is Painting with Words: Re-Envisioning Gender Discourse and the Female Travel Literature and the Art of the Grand Tour 1776-1840. His project focusses on women’s travel literature from the Grand Tour, looking at the perception of Italy and Italians under the British gaze.
His research looks to examine the role of the imagination in the formation of cultural tropes regarding the Italian peninsula, which is achieved not just through literature, but also through art history and visual culture. Read More
