The Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies in cooperation with her partners organises the DOING GENDER Lecture Series. These lectures stress the importance of doing gender work combined with an active involvement in the practice of gender theory and research. The concept of DOING GENDER supports a hands-on approach to gender issues in the sense of social and political engagement with the new forms of gender inequalities that are taking shape in the world today. The lecture series wants to give space to the new generations of gender theorists and practitioners and to perspectives that innovate the field and do gender in new ways. Key is the notion of doing gender: what is the state of the art definition of gender? How do contemporary scholars and activists utilise this definition?

On Wednesday March 16, 2022  Dr. Ewa Majewska will give the Doing Gender Lecture Feminist Antifascism. Counterpublics of the Common.

Lecture: Feminist Antifascism. Counterpublics of the Common.
The recent feminist mobilizations, resulting in the International Women’s Strike and protests in some 70 countries, provide a socio-political context for a reconfiguration of the thinking of antifascism and political resistance. Together, the #metoo and the IWS undermine the heroic politics of the winners, offering a plethora of strategies of what could be called “the weak resistance”. Such transition – from the political agency shaped according to the male, white, straight hegemonic subjectivity towards the resistance of the oppressed and marginalized, allows a feminist deduction of the counterpublics of the Common, understood in line with the post-Spinozean thinking of the multitude in revolt, but also with the more recent discussion of the weapons of the weak, the queer art of failure and feminist interpretations of precarity. Today’s antifascism is feminist in embracing the non-hegemonic, minoritarian strategies, in recognizing the vulnerable subjectivities and strategies avoiding heroism and bravery. We need to think in and with this shift, to maintain our response-ability to the inequalities and solidarities built as we speak.
