Rana Kuseyri (she/they) is a PhD candidate at the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University. Her project is tentatively titled, “Data Subjects: Algorithmic Imaginaries and Legal Consciousness of Welfare Recipients in the Dutch Datafied Welfare State.” Seeking to understand the everyday experiences of navigating the digital and datafied welfare state, Rana’s project will do an ethnography of welfare recipients seeking welfare-related support and legal advice in the Netherlands. It will explore what welfare recipients understand Dutch welfare law to be, how it is mediated by digital systems, portals and algorithms, and how this relates to their position, identity, and choices within the welfare system.
Before starting this project, they worked as a social-legal advisor in Rotterdam. Rana graduated with an LLM in Legal Research from Utrecht University in 2023 and also holds a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences and an LLB in Dutch Law from Leiden University. Read More
