Sara Verderi is a PhD candidate in Gender at Utrecht University and research assistant for the Horizon 2020 ITN GRACE (gender and cultures of equality in Europe) project. She studied Arabic Language, cultures and markets at the University of Bologna (Italy) and received her MA degree in Women’s and gender studies from The American University in Cairo (Egypt). She was Erasmus Mundus scholar at Damascus University (Syria), Erasmus scholar at The University of Manchester (UK) and visiting scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University (India). Her current research focuses on the memory of 2011 civil uprising in Syria and how intellectuals and artists mobilize memories and oral narratives in the present(s) to create a space for critical imagining of sovereignty, citizenship, and rights in the European context. Her interests also include social movements in contemporary Egypt.
