Dr. Marie-Louise Janssen lectures in the areas of gender and sexuality studies, migration and human trafficking and ethnographic research methods and techniques at the department of Cultural Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam. She got her master degree in Cultural Anthropology in 1991. In 2007 she completed her PhD with the title: Sex Workers on the Move. Latin American Women in the European Sex Industry , focusing on the construction of female identity of this specific group of immigrants and the personal interpretations they give to their identities as women, immigrants and sex workers. She has published on prostitution, the sex industry and human trafficking, and her research activities are mainly centered on the way how processes of exclusion and inclusion, as well as the intersection between gender, ethnicicty, class and citizenship take place and shape the experiences of (migrant) sex workers in society.
